Termites

Termites are a fact of life in Virginia. They cause millions of dollars of damage to structures, primarily residences. No structure, not even brick or slab construction, is immune to their insidious appetite. The evidence of infestation is often difficult to detect and commonly the first sign of termites noticed by property owners may be a "swarm" occurring in spring. But swarming is usually only the tip of the iceberg. The worker termites are active 24 hours a day, 365 days a year foraging for new sources of wood and gathering food to nourish the rest of the colony: queens, soldiers, and young. (more)

The best defense against termites is both a good inspection and a treatment program, either preventative or curative.

The Difference between Termites and Ants

Flying ants and swarming termites are often difficult to tell apart. Termites have relatively straight, beadlike antennae while ants have elbowed antennae. Termites have two pair of wings (front and back) that are of equal length. Ants also have two pair of wings but the fore wings are much larger than the hind wings. The abdomen of the termite is broadly joined to the thorax while the abdomen and thorax of the ant are joined by a narrow waist.
